LucasFilm: Force Is Not With 'Star Wars' Auction

Posted by Eriq Gardner

Lucasgeorge George Lucas is claiming that a "Star Wars" convention has moved over to the dark side.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in nothern California, LucasFilm says that Gen Con, a company that puts on gaming conventions, failed to uphold a contract to deliver proceeds from a "Star Wars" memorabilia auction to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

According to this complaint, Gen Con owes almost $1 million to the charity and to LucasArts for proceeds from an auction held at last May's Gen Con convention in Los Angeles. LucasFilm says it undertook expenses to advertise the auction to increase participation.

Wow. I love LucasFilm. And I enjoyed the Gen Con I went to last August. I hope this is all a big misunderstanding. But if Gen Con really did keep money that was supposed to go to Make a Wish...

I was at that convention also, for the Street Fighter Universal Fighting System card game championship, and got to gwak at all the awesomeness that was there. I also hope that GenCon pays up so they dont lose their convention in Indy this year.

I am shocked, usually he is suing out of spite, this might actually be his first lawsuit for good. But then again..... its George Lucas so who really knows.

when was Gen Con in LA? I have been to some of them but always near Chicago.

Steven,

Gen Con LLC ran Gen Con SoCal in Anaheim for a couple of years, but the particular event where this auction happened was Star Wars Celebration IV, a convention that Gen Con LLC ran under license from Lucasfilm.

Gen Con's main convention is Gen Con Indy, held each summer in Indianapolis.
