Photographer Plaintiff Paints Picture of Paparazzi Prejudice

Photographer Alison Silva is suing Keanu Reeves after claiming he was intentionally run over by the actor's Porsche. So far, the plaintiff hasn't had much luck getting a court to buy the charges of assault and battery; however, the negligence claims still stand.

What makes this case interesting is the fact that Silva has filed court papers that the words "paparazzi" and "paparazzo" may unfairly prejudice a jury against Silva. "In recent years, and especially since the death of Princess Diana, the term 'paparazzo' has received a negative connotation," writes Silva's lawyer, Joseph Farzam.

Veronique de Turenne of the LA Times wonders: "If you show a jury a photo of these paparazzi celebrity photographers angling for a shot of Britney Spears last January, will vocabulary make a difference, or will a picture be worth a thousand words?"
