PiracyWatch: What do Jay-Z, 'True Blood' and 'District 9' have in common?

By Eriq Gardner

Jay-z In the last few weeks, Hollywood has been a victim of major leaks of some hot properties. Here's a roundup of some recent news on the front:

Music: Despite efforts by Jay-Z to make sure that Blueprint 3 didn't leak before its official release today, including the rapper hand delivering the album to Atlantic Records in London, songs from the album have been appearing online for weeks. Jay-Z has already fingered the source of his troubles — producing superstar Timberland. "(I don't know) whether Timbaland or his camp got their email jacked or however, because it was only his songs that leaked first," said Jay-Z.

Movies: Late last week, a DVD quality version of Sony's "District 9" appeared in file-sharing circles. According to Torrentfreak, the sci-fi thriller is already "well on its way to becoming the most pirated movie of 2009."  The film finished fifth at last week's box office and has just passed the $100 million domestic gross mark.

Television: It's been largely quiet on the TV front since most network shows are on summer hiatus or haven't been introduced yet. But some pay cable TV shows, including HBO's "True Blood" and "Entourage" and Showtime's "Dexter," are leaking and are among the top 15 most pirated TV shows, according to ShowInsider. Also, in the UK newspaper The Guardian yesterday, a columnist wondered whether distribution deals that make British viewers wait weeks or months to see a show after the US premiere can be blamed for compelling some to illegally download.
